Yelena Yemchuk was born in Kiev in the Ukraine. At the age of 11, she moved with her family to the United States. Yelena first became interested in photography at the age of 14. By the time she entered university, she was entirely fascinated with film, art and photography, and began studying fine art and graphic design at Parsons School of Design in New York City. Yelena later moved to the West Coast where she continued her studies at the Art Center in Pasadena, California. Yelena began her career in the music world directing music videos and taking photographs for various artists. In 2000, Yelena chose to pursue her love of photography, showing her work in galleries world-wide, including a solo show at New York’s Dactyl Foundation for the Arts and Humanities in 2002. Yelena is currently working on a book of these works. Yelena is also a passionate painter, whose most recent exhibition opened in October, 2004, also at the Dactyl Foundation in New York City. Today, Yelena shoots advertising campaigns for clients such as Cacharel, Vera Wang, Kenzo, Nuala (Christy Turling-ton’s line for Puma) Dries Van Noten and Christian Lacroix. Her editorial contributions include Japanese and Italian Vogues, V Magazine, i-D, and The New Yorker, among others. Yelena is based between New York and Europe.
